Grand Entrance
Your grand entrance is the moment the celebration truly kicks into gear; it’s your first big introduction as newlyweds and sets the tone for the rest of the reception. Before the day arrives, it’s helpful to chat through a few details so everything flows smoothly.
- Will your entrance be formally announced? And if so, who will be entering - your full bridal party, parents and bridal party, or just the two of you?
- If you’re planning an announced entrance, be sure to talk with your DJ about music choices so the energy matches the vibe you want. A little planning here goes a long way in making this moment feel fun, seamless, and totally “you.”
After ceremony our timeline is a little more relaxed, we will still have a set schedule but if things are early or late then it's not a big deal! :)
First Dance
The first dance is a beautiful blend of movement, emotion, and atmosphere. My approach is to document it naturally, focusing on the way you hold each other, the reactions from your guests, and the energy of the room as your story continues to unfold.
- Will your dance be choreographed? - If yes, then I would love a video so I can know exactly where to stand to get those important moments.
- What is your song?- Some couples have trouble agreeing on a song; it's usually between two songs. I've recommended playing one as your first dance and the other as your final dance. Both moments are special and intimate in their own ways!
- I've noticed that the groom likes to take off his jacket between cocktail hour and first dance. But he usually puts it back on right before the dance, and leaves the collar popped. I recommend checking before grand entrance to make sure that his collar looks right.
Parent Dances
Parent dances are some of the most tender, memorable moments of the entire reception. When they’re able to happen, they create a beautiful pause in the celebration - it's a chance to honor the people who helped shape you and supported you on the journey to this day.
I’ve seen everything from classic father‑daughter and mother‑son dances to mother‑daughter moments, and even sweet grandmother dances that bring the whole room to tears. No matter who steps onto the dance floor with you, these are the kinds of moments that feel incredibly personal and heartfelt.
Cake Cutting
Cake cutting is such a fun and intimate moment for you as a couple. Even though it’s a small part of the reception, there are a few things worth thinking through ahead of time with your DJ, photographer, and partner to make it feel smooth and true to you both.
Below are some things to think about:
- Will your cake cutting be announced? - There are three options: having your DJ announce it, cutting the cake in the room without an announcement, or cutting it completely in private. None of these are wrong — it’s all about personal preference and what feels most comfortable.
- Will you be traditionally cutting your cake? - Some couples cut it the classic way, while others dive in with forks or even hands. All are super cute and fun.
- How are you eating your cake? - Most couples use forks, I've noticed that using your fingers to pick up the cake and feed it to each other can look a little more flattering in photos.
- Will you be smashing cake into each other’s faces? - It’s not as common anymore, but it still happens sometimes unexpectedly. I recommend chatting about it beforehand so you’re both on the same page.
Dancing
The dance floor opening is hands‑down one of the most fun and electric parts of the night. It’s the moment the energy shifts, everyone loosens up, and the celebration really takes off. It’s also when we as photographers get to be extra creative. We're playing with motion blur, shooting from unexpected angles, and capturing all the candid, joy‑filled chaos that makes receptions unforgettable. Below are some things I’ll capture:
- Candids of the couple together and separately
- Guest candids
- Props - Glow sticks, sunglasses, foam sticks, etc, whatever you bring, I’ll capture the fun.
- Drinks being passed from bartenders
- Group dance moments
- Dance‑offs and spontaneous moments
Messy Flat Lay
Messy flat lays are one of my favorite creative touches, and I usually photograph them once the dance floor is open. During this time, I’ll quietly come over, snag your rings, and bring them to my setup for a few minutes while you’re enjoying the party. It's a fun way to capture the “beautiful chaos” of your day. Below are some fun things I love adding to a messy flat lay:
- Rings
- Cake slice from cake cutting
- Bouquet petals or greenery
- Polariods
- Veil
- Custom Napkins
- Ribbon or fabrics
- Champagne corks or signature drink garnishes
- Glasses
- Shoes
