The Groomsmen

From getting ready, to ceremony, to formal portraits - the groomsmen bring personality, style, and a whole lot of energy to the day. My approach blends natural moments with clean, confident portraiture to create images that feel elevated and authentic.

Getting Ready

The groomsmen's getting‑ready space always sets the tone - it’s usually high‑energy, relaxed, and full of personality. The groom often brings the vibe, whether that’s calm and collected or loud and hilarious. My goal during this part of the day is to capture the atmosphere exactly as it feels: the laughter, the banter, the quiet moments, and everything in between.

Here are some of the moments we’ll photograph during groomsmen getting ready:

  • Candid moments - laughing, joking, helping each other get ready
  • Adjusting ties, cufflinks, jackets, and final touches
  • Groom with his best man
  • Group cheers or toasts
  • Details: boutonnieres, watches, ties, shoes
  • The overall atmosphere of the room
  • Emotional moments with parents or siblings
  • Board games or card games
  • Gifts for the groomsmen
  • Playing pool or other fun activities

This part of the day is all about capturing the energy of the guys - the camaraderie, the excitement, and the moments that make the lead‑up to the ceremony unforgettable.

Find inspiration on Pinterest, Instagram, TikTok or even my website and create boards for your groom portraits. We can design a mood board for your day.

Ceremony

During the ceremony, the groomsmen play a big role in the overall atmosphere and how the photos look. You’re in the frame for most of the ceremony, so staying aware of posture and presence helps everything look sharp. Remember to smile when it feels natural, keep your shoulders back, and keep your attention toward the couple unless you’re having a genuine reaction.

Here are a few things to think about for the ceremony:

  • Will the groomsmen walk in with the bridesmaids or individually?
  • Will they be standing or sitting during the ceremony?
  • All objects should be removed from pockets prior to photos (phones, zyns, wallets, keys etc.)
  • Keep shoulders back and stand tall
  • Stay engaged and focused on the couple
  • Avoid fidgeting with hands or pockets
  • If holding items (rings, vows, etc.), keep them low and discreet
  • When standing in a line, leave even spacing between each person

These small details help the ceremony look polished and ensure the photos feel clean, and full of genuine emotion.

Formal Portraits

Formal portraits with the groomsmen are quick, clean, and organized - this is where we get the classic group shots and individual photos of each groomsman with the groom. Paying attention and moving efficiently here means we can get through the traditional poses fast and jump into the fun stuff.

Once the formal photos are done, we’ll shift into more personality‑filled moments like tossing the groom in the air, cheering, taking a shot together, or just hanging out as a group. The goal is to capture both the polished portraits and the genuine energy of the guys.

The groomsmen's job during the day is to make sure everyone is on time & the groom looks sharp.
